Automakers still making a date with the powerful V-8 engine

USA Today -- Just when its future looked to be in doubt, automakers are putting some new life in the old V-8.

Despite pressure from federal gas mileage rules ratcheting up, makers are selectively peppering their lineups with the iconic engine — known for smooth, high-torque power — that many thought was an endangered species. These days, however, it likely is reserved for luxury or performance models.

Last week, Ford Motor said a hulking 6.2-liter V-8 will power its off-road performance pickup, the super-size Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew cab. And Chrysler Group said its new 2011 Dodge Durango "performance SUV," a three-row crossover due later this year, will have an optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, as well as a standard V-6.

That was in the days when gear ratios were different. In today's world, improved gear ratio provides a lot more power on the road in some 4-bangers than some of the old V-8 put out.

I have a 1992 Buick Roadmaster and I get 32 road and 20 city. That is better than most small cars we have today. 19 years later the cars today should get 60 to 70 MPG.

Make them as fuel efficient as possible, while maintaining a good amount of torque. Construction and farming require trucks with this kind of power. I wonder if diesel engines provide this kind of pulling power? Diesel is more energy efficient and could possibly, be better for the environment.

They haven't improved anything pertaining to milage in the last 25 years of any significance.

I couldn’t do with less in that but I can’t think why anyone would want a V8 in an ordinary car, pickup or SUV.

It seems too many people want to micromanage what kind of cars can be available to purchase. If some people want to buy a V-8 or a wagon... why can't they have the freedom to do so. Is fuel economy now some "pagan god" we should worship?

Will run on e-85 if you want less milage. A big car with a big engine some times will get better milage if you don't pedal to the metal all the time.
