A Global Nuclear Power Play for Your Portfolio

SeekingAlpha.com -- Carl T. Delfeld

Excerpts

Developing countries, particularly China and India, are building fast and furiously.

"Environmental concerns are always an issue, but spent uranium fuel can be recycled safely, as is now done in France. Plans to use thorium as a fuel ...lessen the need for recycling since it burns much more efficiently than uranium.

One other benefit is that the by-product of thorium-fueled reaction is contaminated plutonium, which is unsuitable for use in making nuclear weapons.

"Thorium is also plentiful: the U.S. and Canada each have more than 100,000 tons of reserves...transition to thorium would also be relatively easy since it can be used in existing reactors..."

America is a significant player and Westinghouse Electric is building four nuclear reactors in China.

Short term, nuclear is the only way to grossly cut CO2 emissions.

BillA, comparing Chernobyl and Three Mile Island is like comparing apples and oranges. Chernobyl was operated by the Soviets. 'Nuff said. I'd also like to know where you got your figures for the "death count" at Three Mile Island. Do some research next time before you go shooting your mouth off. It'll give you some credibility.

"More nuclear waste when they haven't been disposing of what we have already adequately."
TRUE INDEED, TIGERPAW46!!!
Lets not forget those who died from "Three Mile Island" and The Chernobyl disaster in the 1980s.... oh I'm sorry, we were supposed to forget that part of Three Mile Island is still highly radiative.

We need to catch up with the developing world. Reprocessing waste into more usable fuel would be one option. The leftovers could be recycled further to power pebble-bed reactors for more years to come. And the leftovers from that could be buried somewhere like Yucca mountain. I read an article a while ago saying that over the person's entire lifetime in France, their entire electricity uses would produce about a teacup's volume of nuclear waste, which France simply buries.

Reprocessing is still the answer. France and Russia have been performing this task successfully for many years. The USA is being left in the dust in this nuclear boom going on throughout the World.

Sounds like a good long term solution if one is willing to take on the risk. No matter how backwards or anti-nuclear the US remains, SOMEONE somewhere will innovate and move forward, and there will be money to be made in whatever third world land that is.

Since Thorium cannot be used for weapons, perhaps we can convince Iran to use it instead or uranium, then we can sleep better at night. I still wish we had gone forward with the neutron bomb.

Obama's support of nuclear energy in Georgia is good start. Now if only Obama can persuade his fellow democrat Harry Reid to open Yucca Mountain & make use of the billions that money pit already swallowed.

nobama knows he is gone in november 2012, so i ain't surprised at any of his "change you can believe in"..

i hope france can recycle spent uranium fuel better than it can fight a war, cuz their record ain't real good there..

We should have enough atomic reactors to supply all of our energy needs. It is the cheapest next to hydro and is actually the safest.

Recycling spent nuclear fuel was made illegal in this country by Pres. Jimmy Carter. We would have much less high level nuclear waste if we were allowed to reprocess it.
